The Layout Guide (LG) is the community guide on how articles should be structured on Wiki101. It contains information for both in-universe (IU) and out-of-universe (OOU) article content.

Title formatting

If the article name is a title and uses italics or has a disambiguation (example: Skull Island (world)), then the DISPLAYTITLE magic word should be used to format the title as it appears at the top of an article.

TopIcon

Examples:

F
NF
 • The TopIcon template applies a clickable icon to the top right of an article denoting whether it is about an in-universe or real-world subject.

Spoiler tag

Example:

Spoiler

Maintenance templates

Example:

Citation

Context templates

Example:

Noncanon

Redirection tags

Example:

other uses of Deirdre

Infobox

Example (for an article about a wizard, namely Ceren Nightchant)

Opening quote

Example:

I've pulled bigger things than you out of my nose!
 • An opening quote is welcome for pretty much any type of article.
 • Quotes can be said by the article's subject, or said by someone else about the article's subject.

Introduction

Articles should have an introduction section that essentially outlines all the major pieces of information about the subject, and serves as a sort of "preview" to the article body. It should be concise, and not too overly detailed. For example, instead of outlining the entire plan of how Malistaire acquired the Krokonomicon, you would simply write that the event happened and briefly outline a cause and effect, piecing it together to the other major plot points that will summarize his character's story.

Article body

In the case of in-universe articles, the article bodies will comprehensively cover all content from applicable Spiral Games Universe media that KingsIsle themselves did not declare non-canon. Refer to Wiki101:Canon Policy#What is considered canon? and Wiki101:Canon policy#What is a reliable source? for information on what sources should be included. No non-canon content should be included in the main body of an article. For example, biographies on characters in Abracadoodle that also appear in Wizard101 should be put in the "Trivia" section.

Example:

Joe Bloggs was... (insert introductory sentence or paragraph)

Biography
Early life
...
...
...
Century War
...
Attack on the castle
...
Death
...

Images

Example:

 • Images should be placed where most relevant and shouldn't interrupt the flow of the article.
 • Placing images immediately underneath a heading or subheading usually works the best.
 • Images in an article body should typically alternate from right to left, but if an infobox is long enough that it bleeds into the Biography section, images can be aligned left until the infobox ends.
 • Punctuation in image captions is determined by whether the caption is a complete sentence.

Quotes

Example:

 • In addition to the introductory quote, further quotes may be used throughout the article body
 • Only one quote is allowed at the beginning of each section.
 • Quotes are always included "as-is" with the original spelling and formatting that's found in the source of the quote. In the case of a typo or other error, [sic] may be included to indicate the error is from the source and not the article.

Sections

In-universe and out-of-universe articles are structured in a certain manner. Here are some examples, though they may not cover everything:

 • Description (Location articles): Gives a brief overview of the physical/visual attributes of the location.
 • Biography (Character articles)/History (Location/Organization/Item articles, etc.): Details all notable events in the history of the article subject. Certain events can be put under sub-headings or eras as deemed necessary.
 • Points of interest/Locales (Location articles): A list of all the major points of interest for that specific location.
 • Personality (Character articles): Explanation of the personality and character traits of the character.
 • Relationships (Character articles): A table-like section listing the allies, enemies, and family members of the subject.
 • Trivia: Various facts related to the subject that aren't listed elsewhere. These are usually minor.
 • Appearances: A list of media appearances of the subject. These are listed by the real-world release date of the specific piece of media, regardless of if the subject was added to said media after its release. For media that is considered "non-canon," add the Nc template after the linked title.
 • Sources: Official, usually out-of-universe published material that in which the article subject is mentioned or appears in. An example of a source that should be listed in this section is a KingsIsle Live episode. These are listed by real-world release date.
 • Gallery: A gallery of (notable) images pertaining to the article subject that would reasonably be of interest to readers.
 • Notes and references: This section is used for a list containing all cited references for the article as well as any notes (if there are any).
 • External links: External links that are related to the article subject.

 • Biography/History/Career: Details all notable events in the history of the article subject. Certain events or eras can be put under sub-headings as deemed necessary.
 • Roles (For voice actors): A list of all of the voice roles that person has done, seperated by game.
 • Credits (For people): Credits that a certain person has.
 • Trivia: Various facts related to the subject that aren't listed elsewhere. These are usually minor.

Footer

Navboxes

Navigation boxes (navboxes) are templates at the bottom of a page that help readers find articles about related subjects.

Categories

Example (from Merle Ambrose):

 • Every article should have ALL applicable categories.
 • The categories should be in alphabetical order.
 • The DEFAULTSORT magic word is used to properly organize a character or real-world person.
