The human known simply as "The Wizard" is a powerful and semi-divine Wizard from Earth who was initially recruited by Merle Ambrose and Gamma to fight back against Malistaire Drake, who threatened to destroy the Spiral. Once unaware of their magical ability, the Wizard was brought to Wizard City and became a student of Ravenwood School of Magical Arts. The Wizard was able to foil Malistaire's plans to revive his wife Sylvia and re-awaken the Dragon Titan on the world of Dragonspyre as an ultimate revenge. After a climactic battle atop the world's volcano, Malistaire was killed, and peace returned to the Spiral once again. For their triumph, the Wizard was given the title of Master Wizard.

Sometime following Malistaire's defeat, a distress call was sent from Celestia, an underwater world, by Thurston Plunkett of the Spiral Geographic Society. Morganthe, the Umbra Queen, attempted to re-awaken her army, the Shadow Web, and take her place as Queen of the Spiral. With a haunting prophecy that detailed her plan, the Wizard fought the forces of Shadow across multiple worlds, but was unable to stop the destruction of Azteca to Xibalba. Travelling to Khrysalis, the Wizard fought Morganthe in her Shadow form, but not before falling into space.

After defeating Morganthe, the Wizard graduates from Ravenwood and moves onto the Arcanum, a secret magical academy located inside of a ship outside of the greater Spiral. They are sent on a series of missions to deal with the conflict between Grandmother Raven and Grandfather Spider, and to solve the mystery surrounding the Old One and the Nothing.
