"Breathe deep, my friends, for this is not water you tread, but the living dreams of Wallaru! In these waves which are not water swim the thoughts which yearn to be real. These are the depths of unreality where the has-been, the might-be and the never-will float entwined together."
Sandiago[src]

The Dreaming is a mystical region full of Dream Water which is located in Wallaru and located beyond its Great Barrier. The Dream Water, and by extension the Dreaming itself, is created by the Dreamer, a cosmic entity opposite to Bartleby that oversees the domain of un-reality. Both Bartleby and the Dreamer are unaware of each other, and of the other's domain. Not entirely real, the Dreaming is the place where thoughts and dreams yearn to enter reality, and it is connected to the minds of Wallaruans. It contains not only memories, but potentials, and even things which will never be real. The minds of those who enter the Dreaming as the end result of a Walkabout are given great inspiration, as demonstrated by Joan Locke being inspired to create the Billabong Resort. But this inspiration isn't always for the right reasons, as the Old One was given the inspiration for the World Synthesizer after his time in the Dreaming. Many years later, Freddie Kroaker used the Dreaming to incite hatred and prejudice in the minds of Wallaru, as part of a plan to destroy the Great Barrier and flood the Spiral in order to restore the First World. The Wizard and a group of allies managed to enter the Dreaming and stop him. Soon after, however, they re-entered the Dreaming when it was discovered that a creature Kroaker had created named Malus was continuing to corrupt the minds of Wallaru from a realm of the Dreaming known as the Nightmare, ruining negotiations and threatening a civil war. They navigated through the Nightmare and defeated Malus, bringing relative peace back to Wallaru.[1]
