Long ago, across the sands of time the young Krok, Alhazred began his study of magic. He entered the Pyramid of the Sun to join the Fire school...and then the Krokosphinx to study Ice magic...then The Tomb of Storms to learn Divination. Try though he might, Alhazred was unable to dedicate himself to one school – he found satisfaction and dissatisfaction in all three.
It was during his search for his magical calling that Alhazred became distressed at the lot of the Manders and became determined to find a way to help them. He then discovered that he was not alone in this. In each school of magic he studied he found other Kroks of like mind. Some of them were among the most powerful magic users in Krokotopia. It was Alhazred who first suggested that they begin meeting in secret and thus was born the Order of the Fang.
Alhazred became convinced that they could put an end to the exploitation of the Manders, despite the fact that they were vastly outnumbered by the Tut castes. His secret was a blending of the three elemental schools as well as the three spirit schools, heretofore unknown in Krok. Able to defend against the houses offensive magic, Alhazred was able to utilize the secrets of Life and Death to bind the Tuts into the long sleep – and these were the secrets he and the order preserve in the famed (and infamous) Krokonomicon.
In doing so, Alhazred found that he himself had founded his own unique form of magic. He chose to codify his magic into its own unique school: Balance.
Alhazred spent the time of the Great Sleep perfecting and honing the spells of his new school. Soon he found himself surrounded by students – at first just Kroks and Manders but little by little folk from all corners of the Spiral came to learn this powerful new type of magic.
It was in this way that Alhazred became aware of Wizard City and first learned of the Council of Light and Merle Ambrose. Alhazred grew frustrated that the Balance School was not represented in Ravenwood but he was unwilling to leave Krokotopia lest he be absent if the Tuts rose again. Instead he elected to send his best student at the time, Arthur Wethersfield, a Marleybonean adept who had also once studied at Ravenwood.

Headmaster Ambrose was more than pleased to welcome Professor Wethersfield to his faculty and thus, the Balance School has found a second home under the branches of Bartleby.
