Ratbeard is an infamous Rat pirate who belongs to the Beard family of Port Regal, and served his father's business before later losing a fight with Captain Fowl after double crossing him, which resulted in his father's death. Disgraced by his defeat and ostracized from his family, Ratbeard was consumed by a need for revenge and crawled his way through the most dangerous skyways of the Spiral on a quest to buy a galleon that could rival Captain Fowl's, the Turkey Buzzard.

Ratbeard was born into the infamous Beard family of pirates, and as such was destined to be a pirate from birth, as a prince of the Port Regal Underworld. He spent his early years pirating and smuggling, tending to his father's business.
Eventually, Ratbeard would foolishly try to double cross Captain Fowl, known as one of the worst pirates to ever sail the skyways of Cool Ranch. The two engaged in a fight in which Fowl made quick work of Ratbeard, making him lose his leg. After the fight, Fowl killed Ratbeard's father, burned their hideout to the ground, and stole Ratbeard's favorite parrot, Mrs. Chillingsworth.
Ratbeard was disgraced and angered by his defeat, and sought revenge on Captain Fowl. He was ostracized from the Beard family, and Ratbeard became little more than a typical thug, sailing through the worst skyways of the Spiral and pillaging as much gold as he could so that he meet his goal of buying a ship large enough to take on Fowl's galleon, the Turkey Buzzard. He was halfway to his goal, when he heard of a mysterious expedition being formed by Captain Horace Avery. Ratbeard hatched a plan, and spent the rest of his meager fortune to hire a crew of Wharf Rats. He was going to bet everything he had on a chance to find Gunn's Gold, the greatest treasure in Skull Island.[1]
