Pirate101 is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by KingsIsle Entertainment. It is the second MMORPG in the Spiral Games Universe and a "sister game" to Wizard101. The game's story revolves around a young, orphaned Pirate who is captured by the Armada but freed thanks to the intervention of Boochbeard and Mr. Gandry. Training on Skull Island under the tutelage of Mr. Avery's organization and setting out on their own, the Pirate gathers a crew and embarks on a skyfaring adventure across the Spiral, frequently coming head-to-head with the Armada of Valencia, led by the villainous automata Kane.

The game was initially launched for Windows on October 15, 2012, following an early access release on October 8. This Windows release was followed by a Mac release less than a year later, on September 19, 2013. Just months after the game's 10th anniversary, it was released on Steam on May 31, 2023.

Story[]

Pirate101's narrative is set up in "Books", all of which are comprised of several chapters.

Note: Due to your main story companion being different based on player choice, in this synopsis they are referred to as "Armada prisoner".

Book I - A Pirate's Life for Me[]

Introduction - Skull Island Skullduggery

Locked up in the Brig of the Armada ship the Erebus, you are met by two pirates, Boochbeard and Mr. Gandry. They are unsure if you are the prisoner they are looking for, so they ask you a few personal questions to confirm that you are in fact the correct person. Boochbeard attempts to open the door to let you out of your cell, but the bulkhead is bent. Suddenly, an explosion blasts open the wall behind you, and Boochbeard tells you to go through and make your way back around to him and Gandry. While on your way around, you free another Armada prisoner. Meeting up with Boochbeard and Gandry, the three of you run to the end of the hallway and up the stairs.

On the deck of the ship, Deacon accuses Boochbeard of trying to take his "prize" and commands that you must not be allowed to escape the ship. Three Battle Angels, the Armada's elite warriors, fly down after a signal from Deacon and inititate a fight, but you easily take care of them with the guidance of the other pirates and the additional strength of the other Armada prisoner. Before you can celebrate however, a group of five Dragoons rise up to the deck on a platform and point their guns at you. Boochbeard gets creative and fires some kind of explosive rocket, causing an explosion that obliterates all of the Dragoons simultaneously. Deacon surrenders, but tells you that you'll regret making an enemy of the Armada, and to enjoy your freedom while it lasts. He then fires his spark thrower at a pile of explosive boxes in front of Boochbeard, causing a blast that sends Boochbeard flying and injures him, also temporarily blinding him. As Boochbeard is unable to captain his ship, he orders you take the rope down to his ship and take the helm so you, him, and Mr. Gandry can get to safe harbor. On Boochbeard's ship, you speed up and through a fleet of Armada ships, taking heavy fire. Using the ship's Windstone, you go even faster until arriving and porting at the docks at Skull Island. Boochbeard tells you to find Captain Avery as he's an old friend of his, and is always hiring good pirates for various schemes.[1]

Once inside Avery's office, the pirate governor asks you if you're on the run from the Armada, and offers you the chance of being hidden from them if you're willing to help him. Recently, a buccaneer from Avery's crew, Fin Dorsal, stole his Jade Amulet, and Avery needs it back. Fin fled to Skull Mountain and riled up the Troggies, resulting in them starting a bombardment onto the West Bastion. If you're gonna be a pirate, you'll need a ship, and so if you do the job for Avery and get his Jade Amulet back, he will give you one.

You report to Chief Gunner Rigby at the request of Avery, and Rigby tells you to keep your head down because of the bombardment by the Troggies. The bombardment needs to be stopped, so to being your help he tells you to speak with Bonnie Anne, who had gone across the bridge to "teach the Troggies a lesson". Going over the bridge, you meet up with Bonnie Anne, who asks who you are before you tell her that Avery sent you. She tells you that the Troggies raided her people last night and took half of their powder stores, which they're using to fling back at the town. Bonnie tells you to fight some of these Troggies running around and report to Lieutenant Smollet, after which she will help you find Fin Dorsal. You fight the Troggies and report to Smollet, who compliments you on your skill. He asks if you're here for Fin, but says that he can wait, as Skull Island is threatened. He tells you that the Troggies are using three great slingshots to hurl fire bombs at the West Bastion, and that the bombardment is wearing down the town's defenses. The cannons at the West Bastion could destroy them, but the farthest slingshot is out of range, and the gunners can't see the other two through the jungle. Smollet tells you to go to the third slingshot and set off the powder kegs they're flinging to destroy it, and then to scout the other two slingshots and mark them on the map he gives you, and report back to him.

With the Troggy Artillery out of action, you report back to Smollet, and now it is time to deal with Fin Dorsal and get Avery's Jade Amulet back. Smollet tells you that Fin fled up the trail, and that he's likely hiding in the Skull Cave. Smollet sent two of his best scouts, Livsey and Shepherd, up the trail to investigate, where they have been for hours. He tells you to go see if the Troggies killed them, and if not, they will know where Fin went. Up ahead, Ensign Livsey calls out for help, and you see him locked up inside of a cage. Livsey can't get the lock open without a key, and so to remove him you have to fight some Troggy Shamans and retrieve a key, after doing which you use the key to open the lock and let Livsey out. He tells you that Fin is up the trail, but he's not alone, as he is accompanied by a whole gang of Sharks, the Cutthroats. They've set up a camp across the bridge, which Livsey and Shepherd both found before the Sharks attacked and the two of them were separated. Livsey says he didn't see Fin, but he must be near, so after you attack some of the Cutthroats and drive them away he will sneak into their camp and see what he can find out and then hide in the mouth of the Skull Cave once he's finished. After your diversion, you meet up with Livsey again, who found a note from Fin in the meantime. The note says that the "buyer" won't be there to get the Jade Amulet for a while, so while Fin waits he will be in the temple, the entrance to which is inside the Skull Cave. You enter the Skull Cave with Livsey and search for a hidden passageway into the temple, opening a treasure chest in the process. The entrance to the temple is found behind the waterfall, but there are vines behind it that you have to cut down first. Once you do this, you go to the forward, until you enter the door to the Temple of Gloom.

The tunnels inside the Temple of Gloom are crawling with Crokagators, but Bonnie Anne notes that you can avoid them if you stick to the walls, as you head to the Throne Room. Eventually, you have to come to a stopping point, as the water is too fast and too deep to traverse. Standing in the corner of the room, Sergeant Shepherd calls you over. He asks if Livsey sent you, and tells you that when he and Livsey split up, he made his way into the temple, but he's been trapped in the same spot for hours, watching and listening. Shepherd tells you that Fin is across the way in the Throne Room, but that the water is too rough to swim, as Bonnie Anne had suggested—if you want to cross you'll need to press the keystones on the three statues at the shrine at the other end of the tunnels, which will make the water drain. Shepherd continues with a warning that the Troggies are holed up in the shrine, and will do everything they can to stop you, and that to even get into the shrine you'll need to get a key from one of the Cutthroats. You get the key, and use it to unlock the flooded shrine. Inside, you are attacked by Troggies as expected, but once you interact with three of the statues in the room, the stone cylinder in the center drops down until it reveals a hole, draining all of the water in the temple. Returning to Sergeant Shepherd, he tells you that the water is passable now. He says he will help you deal with Fin, as he and Fin have a "score to settle", regardless of the fact that Shepherd feels he should report back. You press on to the temple's Throne Room, where you meet face to face with Fin Dorsal himself. He outlines your "three mistakes": taking the job, not bringing an army, and trying to fight him in the dark. You make pretty quick work of Fin, and his Cutthroats are too scared to fight once their leader is beaten. Fin tells you to remember this moment as the moment you won your first victory, and also the moment you made him you worst enemy. Shepherd tells Fin to shut up and compliments your fighting skills, and says he will report back to Lieutenant Smollet, telling you to take the Jade Amulet back to Avery and says he hopes you meet him again. You take the Amulet, and head back to Avery.

In Avery's office, you give him back his Jade Amulet and he seems pleasantly surprised you didn't swap it for a fake. He holds up his end of the deal, and so since you've done your part, he will give you your ship. He gives you a writ to take down to the docks, telling you to seek out Dockmaster Dan. At the dock, Dan congratulates you on being the owner of a mighty Monquistan ship, but then realizes he made a mistake, swapping out the Monquistan ship for a small wooden raft. Blind Mew interjects, saying that your "ship" is the saddest excuse for one that has ever moored at the harbor, and that even though he is blind he can here the ship creaking and groaning like a "sick yak".
