- "My brother Cyrus... you have apparently lost faith in my abilities. How unfortunate... and how blind of you. The lords of Dragonspyre lacked the will to command the Dragon Titan... I am far stronger than they were. I am the Master of Death. The Dragon Titan will do as I command. I will order it to return my wife Sylvia to life, so that she might rule at my side..."
- ―Malistaire Drake[src]
Malistaire Drake, known mononymously as Malistaire, was a powerful necromancer who served as the professor of the School of Death at Ravenwood School of Magical Arts for several years. A member of the esteemed House Drake, Malistaire was the son of the battle mage Vladan Drake and had only one brother, Cyrus. Following the death of his wife Sylvia, a heartbroken and enraged Malistaire ripped the School of Death from Ravenwood and threw it into Nightside. He went on a quest to find the Krokonomicon so that he may revive his dead lover and become the Master of Death in the process, asserting his dominion over the Spiral so that no one could hurt his family ever again.
Beginning with an incursion in Unicorn Way, Malistaire attempted to find a book that would help him track down the Order of the Fang and ultimately, the Krokonomicon. With the help of a young wizard recruited by Merle Ambrose, Unicorn Way was liberated and Malistaire's general Rattlebones defeated, but Malistaire was already following his plan. He would eventually discover that the book was entombed within the Sarcophagus of the Souls, which had been sent by the Marleybonians back to their Royal Museum in Marleybone City. In Marleybone, Malistaire came in contact with the infamous criminal mastermind Meowiarty, and asked him to steal the Krokonomicon from the museum in exchange for his freedom from Newgate Prison. The two would then lock themselves in Big Ben, but by the time the Wizard would intervene, Malistaire had already left for the world of Dragonspyre.
Back in his home world, Malistaire attempted to perform a ritual to awaken the Dragon Titan and try to use its power to bring his dead wife back to the living. His previous attempt to use necromancy on Sylvia to revive her failed, and left her in the form of a Wraith, underlining his inability to fully bring her back alone. However, with the Dragon Titan awake and presumably under his control, Malistaire attempted to use its power to maximize his own, granting him the ability to fully bring Sylvia back to life and completely reverse her death. Through a climactic intervention at the Crown of Fire by the Wizard and involving his brother Cyrus, Malistaire was killed by the Wizard during a fateful duel.
Years later, Malistaire was brought back by Morganthe to aid with the destruction of Xibalba, known initially as the Dark Servant and later revealed as Malistaire the Undying. After Morganthe's defeat he escaped, but held onto his obsession of bringing back his beloved Sylvia. Furious at the Wizard for his death at their hands, he invoked the Law of Kan Davasi, which led to a second and final duel of the fates in Castle Darkmoor. After being bested by the Wizard a second time, Malistaire found peace with Sylvia at last, as the two traversed to the Other Side to spend their afterlifes together forever.

Final battle
- "And so it comes to this. You, shaking in your too-large robes. A flimsy wand trembling in your grasp. The sour scent of fear sweat in the air. And me. EXULTANT in my mastery of magic. In a small way, I should thank you. If you had not sent me spinning off into the void, had not destroyed Morganthe, I might not have been able to achieve this. At my moment of greatest pain and confusion and despair, the locked gates of the Spiral opened before me, and I was able to master Shadow. Once you are but a memory and a pinch of dust upon the wind, I will have the power to restore my Sylvia to her vibrant form. Then we can live out our lives as we planned. Quietly and in peace. And Shadow take any who get in our way. I challenged you under the the ancient Law of Kan Davasi. It is just between us now, Wizard. Prepare your spells and face my cold fury!"

Trivia
- Malistaire's name came from a combination of the words "malice" and "stare," which together mean "evil eye." This is represented by the many "evil eyes" on his robe.[2]
- The Monstrology Tome description for Malistaire the Undying reads: "The most powerful and deadly incarnation of Malistaire the Spiral has ever witnessed. So far." Although this seems to hint (most likely jokingly) at a possible return for Malistaire, it has been made clear in the past that Malistaire's arc ended with Darkmoor.
- Malistaire is voiced by Brian Jepson.
