Hero101 was a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) project in development at KingsIsle Entertainment between May 2012 and December 2014. The game would have let players become a powered hero and save Nexus City from evil villains, choosing from one of several different classes; including Cryomancer, Psychic, Pyromancer, Speedster, Titan, and Vigilante. The planned release window that the project was aiming for is unknown, but development ceased around the time KingsIsle made a strategic shift into producing titles for the mobile games market.

There is significant evidence that the game would have been part of the Spiral Games Universe, sharing continuity with KingsIsle's previously released MMORPGs Wizard101 and Pirate101, but would have taken place on Earth rather than the established setting of the Spiral.

Gameplay[]

Combat[]

Not much is known about the combat in Hero101. Some very basic information (mostly names) has come out about some of the "Powers" that players could harness, but nothing else has come out in that regard. The biggest thing to come out in terms of what the combat would have been is a screenshot presumably from early development that curiously enough takes place in Unicorn Way, where we see a buff guy in a blue outfit fighting a Skeletal Pirate. It is assumed the Hero101 aspects here were temporary assets. Based on the fact that KingsIsle was using Wizard101's engine to test turn-based combat, we can assume that at least in early development that the game would have retained a turn-based combat system like the previous 101 games.

Powers and Talents[]

Each class of hero would have been able to utilize many different "Powers" and "Talents" to attack enemies, heal or buff your stats which would have varied per class and were likely trainable from your respective class trainer in Nexus University. This is a list of all known Powers and Talents, per the game's source directory that we've seen so far. It's possible some of these Powers were exclusive to mobs in the game. Only some of the Powers can be directly attributed to certain classes, others are the most likely fit but aren't 100% confirmed.

Quests[]

As in Wizard101 and Pirate101, Hero101 would have featured a main story questline, as well as side quests. From the unlisted video released by Jeff Haskell in October 2016, we see that "Cadet Quan" was a character that would have been involved with nine different mainline story quests at the time of development, the first two of the quests' names being "Keep it Down" and "Sneaker Imps", both of which were likely at the very start of the game due to the fact that they both had a Level 1 level requirement, and gave 60 XP and 10 Gold each.

Experience[]

An experience system would have implemented that probably worked exactly the same as the prior 101 games. Experience would have been given by quests.

Development[]

Development on what became known as Hero101 began in May 2012, just five months before the public launch of Pirate101. Reportedly, a "giant team" was assigned to work on what was at the time was being tentatively called Superhero101 or Heroes internally. The project was described as a "AAA family-friendly" MMO in which players would take on the role of a superpowered individual in Nexus City and fight against aliens. Jeff Haskell was tapped to be senior game designer, James Leary became associative creative designer, and Chris Douglas handled the game's initial concept and environment art.[1]

Asset usage[]

  • Gobblerton in Karamelle uses a newspaper texture that originated from Nexus City.
  • The Old One's lab inside Madness Mountain in Polaris, which is visited in the second quest in Lemuria, is made up almost entirely of assets from Hero101, particularly Nexus City. This lab was reused several times throughout the world's main storyline.
  • Some of the themes composed by Nelson Everhart for the soundtrack for Lemuria suspiciously use older-sounding instruments than were used by the time of the world's release, leading to fan speculation that the themes were taken from Hero101 directly. This is supported by the fact that the world focuses on Heroes who eventually come together to form the League of Exemplary Personages.
