Grace "Gracie" Conrad is an engineer and privateer from Marleybone. She was formerly a member of the Spiral Geographic Society, which she joined in her desire to see the Spiral. She traveled to Krokotopia to survey its archaeological sites and eventually found herself in Thurston Plunkett's infamous Grand Celestian Expedition. Her exploration with the SGS came to a stop due to hostilies in Valencia, and eventually Conrad began working tirelessly to repair and refit ships of the Marleybone Royal Navy before joining the crew of the individual known as the Pirate.

Biography[]
Early life[]
Grace Conrad was born to her father, the famed "Captain Conrad," and an unidentified mother. Coming from a long line of Merchant Marines, Grace wanted to follow in the footsteps of her father, but her father insisted that she get a good education instead. She became the first of her family to go to university, going to Strathclydesdale College in Albion, known as the greatest Engineering University in the Spiral.[1]
Travel with the SGS[]
After graduating from Strathclydesdale College, Grace used her engineering skills to design everything from factories to bridges. However, Grace soon became bored of her profession, instead wanting to explore the Spiral. She joined the Spiral Geographic Society and traveled abroad, studying archaeological sites in Krokotopia.[1]
Grand Celestian Expedition[]
Fixing the dome[]
Not long after, Conrad joined Thurston Plunkett's Grand Celestian Expedition. Upon arriving in Celestia however, the Crustaceans staged an attack on the SGS, and the Expedition went awry.
The Crustaceans wrecked the dome in the Survey Camp in hopes of driving away the Dogs, and with the metal of the dome weakening it needed to be fixed so that the entire dome would not collapse. Grace asked for the help of the Wizard to collect a pile of scrap metal that she saw in the Pinnacles, so she could use it to repair the dome.[2] After receiving the metal, Conrad needed something to adhere the scrap metal to the leaks in the dome. She had a paste mix, but was lacking anything oily to mix it with so that it would become an adhesive. Conrad tasked the Wizard with collecting three measures of fish oil from some of Celestia's sea creatures, Voltic Eels and Wing-Fish. They were successful in collecting the oil, and Conrad was able to fix the dome with the supplies.[3] Even though Grace had all the supplies, she worried that the Crustaceans would just wreck it again. She asked the Wizard if there was any way that they could put a stop to the Crustaceans' attacks, noting that the group that attacked came from the Coral Caverns, and that they were about six Crustacean Pincers led by their Optio, Verdis. Conrad told them to defeat Verdis and his Crustaceans, as to end their reign of terror. The Wizard did this, and Conrad expressed she hated to see things resolved like that, though it was justified as they wouldn't listen to reason.[4]
Steam Valet restructuring[]

Later on in the Grand Celestian Expedition, an Aqua-Bot stole schematics Conrad was working on for the restructuring of the design for the Spiral Geographic Society's Steam Valets in the Science Center. She worried that the schematics would fall into the wrong hands, and that whoever got them would use them to restructure the Steam Valets to work against the SGS. Conrad got help from the Wizard again, sending them to find the Aqua-Bot that stole the schematics and remove them from it. She received the schematics when they did this, however they were a bit soggy.[5] Conrad reviewed the schematics, so that she could go forward with implementing her design restructuring. To do this, she needed an actuator from the Steam Winchers, and a hydrospanner from a Water-Maton, both of which roamed the Arboretum. The Wizard brought them back without a scratch.[6]
Construct engineering[]
Because Grace saw the time as a perfect opportunity to further the art of construct engineering, so she wanted some more of the Wizard's time to help her. She told them of Amphibaton, an aquatic construct that resided in the Crystal Reactor, and how it was interesting because of its greater independent thought than its lesser counterparts. She told the Wizard to go dismantle the Amphibaton and bring her back its postulator gear so she could study it and see what makes it so unique. After a fight with the Amphibaton, the Wizard brought Conrad back the postulator gear, and put it inside of Praxus, a construct meant to be a servant to the SGS. The construct turned on, but went into hostile mode, set its goal to destruction, and fled the scene.[7] Conrad explained that Praxus was meant to be the perfect servant, and that now he would destroy everyone. Since his batteries only had a partial charge, he would need a full charge but at which point everyone would be doomed. She speculated that Praxus must have fled to the Crystal Tower in the center of the dome, and she sent the Wizard to stop him. Following Praxus' defeat, she praised the Wizard as everyone's savior, and expressed that now she would be going back to the drawing board.[8]

After the Grand Celestian Expedition, Conrad continued to travel the Spiral, but her travels were cut short when the war broke out between Marleybone and Valencia.
