- "The fools in Puerto Mico think the Gold Monkey is another priceless toy for them to steal. They are wrong - the Gold Monkey is me!"
- ―Gortez[src]
Gortez, known as the "Gold Monkey," is a legendary Monquistador and the current King of Monquista. The son of a stonemason from a poor and backward corner of Monquista, Gortez led the conquest of Skull Island. He is hailed as being greatly influential to the Monquistan empire and their wealth and influence.
Drawn to the Isle of Doom by rumors of vast treasures, Gortez journeyed there with his legion of elite Monquistadors. Initially triumphant, Gortez and his legion collected much gold from the jungle. However, over the months, Gortez decided to built himself a kingdom, and ruled from his Temple of the Gold Monkey.
It wasn't until intervention from the Pirate that he was removed from his position of power and taken to Zenda, where he was to be executed by the Crown. However, the Pirate freed Gortez, and he soon became the general of the Opposition. In the Monquistan civil war, he fought valiantly but was overwhelmed by the enemy forces. Once Napoleguin was freed from Fort Elena, the tide of the war was turned and Gortez seized his place as the King of Monquista, marrying Queen Eleanor.
Biography[]
Early career[]
Gortez was born to commoners in a poor, backward corner of Monquista. The son of a stonemason, he ran away from home at an early age, drawn by the call of adventure and destiny. Gortez was considered extraordinarily cunning and strong, and he won his initial fame as a mercenary. Over several years, his merit earned him a place among the Monquistan nobility as Monquistador. Songs about him were sung all over Monquista.
Gortez's humble upbringing made him impatient towards the pleasantries and intrigues of Monquistan society. Over time, he began to feel worse and worse under the immense weight of expectation and etiquette, and so he spent most of his time in the field, conquering new lands for the glory of Monquista.[1]
