- "Listen, Ebeneezer Scrooge! I am... uh... the Ghost! The Ghost of... Days Gone Past! You have done a great wrong, Ebeneezer Scrooge! Change your ways!"
"What's this? A ghost? You think to scare Ebeneezer Scrooge? Bah! Humbug! I've no fear of you, spirit! Begone, and let me sleep."
"No! Uh... You should be ashamed of yourself! Change your heart, before it's too late!"
"What nonsense is this? Change my heart? Never! My heart was hardened by a hard world of hard truths. Those truths have bought me all I have!" - ―Bonnie Anne acting as the "Ghost of Days Gone Past" and Ebeneezer Scrooge[src]
Ebeneezer Scrooge is a businessman and one of the wealthiest Dogs in Marleybone. The son of the late Silas Scrooge, at a young age Ebeneezer went against his father's wishes of not making any personal investments and invested in shares of Duckburgh Mineral Enterprises in a disastrous act of stock speculation, causing Silas to lose his savings, business, and home. Leaving Marleybone, Silas abandoned his son and left him in the care of the Old Boz Orphanage on the Isle of Dogs, where he remained until he was an adult.
Once he left Old Boz, Scrooge went to MooShu to work for spice trading firm Barks Trading Company, headed by Orman Barks, who would become a replacement father figure to him. Scrooge made a fortune trading spices, but his career with Barks Trading Company came to an end after Ebeneezer rejected his father's pleas when Silas arrived at the company's front door to beg for his son's help. The incident offended Orman Barks, who let Ebeneezer start his own firm. The two companies would work together, but were not close. Scrooge eventually moved back to Marleybone and attained status as one of the richest Dogs in the world.
Scrooge's poor reputation came to a climax when he made plans to purchase and condemn the Old Boz Orphanage. At this point in his life, Scrooge had driven away all of his family and friends, and his past heartbreaks together with guilt for the past set him on a course to hurt the innocent. The ghost of Scrooge's late father sent Lasko to his old captain Ratbeard so that the pirate could help Scrooge find his conscience and stop Old Boz from his scorn. Bonnie Anne, Ratbeard, and Old Scratch, all part of the Pirate's crew, went to Scrooge's house and took on the act of spirits and gained information from Scrooge, who lied on his bed within his bedchamber. This ultimately led them to Scrooge's nephew Ben Holiwell, who had a letter from Silas Scrooge to Ebeneezer which was written on his deathbed, detailing how proud he was of his son's business and his forgiveness towards his past actions. The letter was retrieved from within a sea chest which had been stolen by Ratfink and was given to Ebeneezer to read. His heart was filled by his father's words and he retracted his plans to buy and condemn Old Boz, instead choosing to renovate and improve it.
Biography[]
Early life and career[]
Ebeneezer Scrooge was raised by his father, businessman Silas Scrooge, who ran a carpentry shop in Marleybone. Ebeneezer's father, who he held very dear to him, forbade his son from ever making any investments.
At a young age, Scrooge invested in shares of Duckburgh Mineral Enterprises, an act of stock speculation, but the investment failed miserably. As a result, his father lost his savings, his business, and even his home. He left Ebeneezer in the care of the Old Boz Orphanage on the Isle of Dogs. During his time there, he was frequently visited by Old Joe, who had been a helper at Silas Scrooge's shop. Ebeneezer would stay at Old Boz from the time he was left there until he was an adult.
After leaving Old Boz, Ebeneezer went to MooShu to work for Barks Trading Company under Orman Barks and his son Carl. Orman taught Ebeneezer to be succesful in business, and Ebeneezer grew to consider him more of a father figure than Silas ever was. Ebeneezer would make a fortune trading spices.
One day, Ebeneezer was working with Orman and Carl Barks in Hamamitsu when his father Silas reappeared at their door, with no money to spare and sick, and begged his son for help. Ebeneezer refused to "buy back his childhood" and sent Silas away. The incident left Orman Barks offended, and distance grew between him and Ebeneezer as a result. Orman would let Ebeneezer set up his own firm, which would still work with Barks Trading Company, though the two companies were not close.[1]
Spiritual intervention[]
Sometime later, Ebeneezer Scrooge had moved back to Marleybone and had become one of the wealthiest Dogs in the world. His wealth was seen as having been brought on by at the toil of others, and by this point he had driven away virtually all family and friends. The pain of these heartbreaks and the guilt of his past sins set him on a course to hurt the innocent. The pinnacle of his cruel intentions was when Scrooge made plans to purchase and condemn Old Boz Orphanage, where he once lived.
These intentions inspired the spirit of Silas Scrooge to send Lasko, deceased crewmate of Ratbeard, to get the infamous pirate to make Ebeneezer Scrooge find his conscience. Ratbeard, alongside their captain the Pirate and their crew, went to Scrooge's House on the Isle of Dogs. There, Lasko further informed Ratbeard and instructed him and his crew to take on the guise of ghosts in order to inspire a change of heart in Scrooge.
The first haunting, in which Bonnie Anne took on the role of the "Ghost of Days Gone Past," was unsuccesful in causing any sort of change, though Scrooge's mention of Duckburgh lead to the crew searching Scrooge's office for records mentioning the name. There they found a certificate for shares in Duckburgh Mineral Enterprises, and learned that Old Boz was a location rather than a person and Scrooge's plans for it. On many ledgers they found the name Cratchit, so they went to see him at his house, where he offered to help in the effort to teach Scrooge compassion and informed the crew of Scrooge's Duckburgh incident and subsequent time at Old Boz. They went to Old Boz to try to learn where Scrooge's father ended up, but Mrs. Fizwick did not have a record of him or even a name. Instead, she told them of Old Joe, leading them to speak with him in his tenement. They got there right as Old Joe was being attacked by thugs of the Underdog, though the crew was able to defeat them and save Joe. He went on to tell them about Ebeneezer's poor relationship was his father, giving them the idea of telling Scrooge his father would be ashamed.
In the second haunting, Ratbeard himself took on the role of the "Ghost of Days Gone Present" and asked Scrooge what his father would think of him for the Old Boz situation. Scrooge rejected the invocation of his father's name and informed Ratbeard he had no regrets for what he had done, as in his eyes his father was nothing but a failure. He cited Orman Barks as his true father figure and the reason for his sucess in MooShu, leading the crew there to find him. After asking about Barks, Ambassador Downley of the Marleybone Embassy in Hamamitsu told them that Barks had died some time ago, though his son Carl still ran the family business. But when they went to the Trade Legation, they only found Forsythe, who said that Barks was touring Barks Trading Company's spice farms in Din Ho Village. The village, part of the Ravaged Valley in Subata, was a war zone, so unsurprisingly upon arrival they found that Barks had been taken into a tower by Ninja Pigs. Barks was saved and taken back to the Trade Legation, where he told the crew of the incident in which Ebeneezer sent his own father away while penniless and sick, and how he had taken pity on Silas and sent him to Ebenezer's nephew, Ben Holiwell. The crew went back to Scrooge's house to learn who this Holiwell was.
The third and final haunting was performed by Old Scratch as the "Ghost of The Days Gone Yet to Come" and he asked Scrooge who would remember him when he is dead and if Holiwell would think of him happily. Scrooge went on about how Holiwell had done nothing but squander opportunities, wasted his education, spurned the job he was given, and ran off to Flotsam. The Pirate's crew went to Flotsam thinking that Silas could sitll be with Holiwell, learning of Holiwell's location through his landlord, One-Eyed Jack. Holiwell said he had once hoped to reunite Ebeneezer with his father, but that it was too late to do this, as he was deceased.
Holiwell revealed Old Silas had written a letter to Ebenezer on his deathbed. He believed the letter could be used to thaw Ebeneezer's heart, but it was stolen by Ratfink, who had taken the sea chest it was inside of. The crew defeated Ratfink in his hideout and returned the chest to Holiwell. He took the letter out of the chest and handed it to the crew to give to Scrooge. They gave up the ghost act and personally delivered the letter to Scrooge, who then read it out loud. Learning that his father was proud of his accomplishments and had forgiven him for his mistakes, Scrooge shed his cruel exterior and became light and joyous. He told Ratbeard to go to Old Boz and inform them that they were saved, as he would not be buying the orphanage and condemning it after all. Scrooge then arrived personally and announced to the orphanage would be renovated and improved, even made better than his own home.[1]
