"Darkmoor? Yes, that was my home. Skeletal trees. Ravenous red plants. Fetid lagoons. Lovely. I'd never go back."
Dworgyn[src]

Darkmoor is a world in the Spiral. It is known for its dark atmosphere, strange environments, and frightening creatures. Darkmoor is notably home to the Great Houses as well as the famed Castle Darkmoor, the family estate and home of the powerful Lord Shane von Shane. It is also the homeworld of Dworgyn, Death Professor at Ravenwood School of Magical Arts, Velma von Venkman, Shadow Scholar at the Arcanum, and Madame Vadima, Witchdoctor Trainer at Skull Island.

Following the defeat of Morganthe in Khrysalis, Castle Darkmoor was taken hold by the vengeful Malistaire the Undying, who sought to settle his rivalry with the Wizard once and for all. Malistaire invoked the ancient Law of Kan Davasi, creating an impenetrable ward that prevented any outsiders from interfering. After exploring the castle and discovering its secrets, the Wizard fought Malistaire in a climactic duel inside the Grand Mausoleum, resulting in their victory and Malistaire's peaceful final end, going to the Other Side with the spirit of his beloved wife Sylvia.

Some time later, the Wizard would pursue Miranda Briar and her Broken Branch to Darkmoor after their raid of the Arcanum. There, the Wizard uncovered the secrets of the curse upon Darkmoor as well as its source, the ancient and evil Scholomance. Their further exploration of Darkmoor would result in the destruction of the Great Houses as well as their leader, Balaur, who was secretly the Scholomance's founder and had presented himself as the mysterious "Gray Man."

Description[]

"Can you hear that? Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make! All night. Every night. It's enough to drive one mad."
Renfield FlyGob[src]

Darkmoor has a dark, gloomy, and moonlit atmosphere that is supplemented by the howls of wolves and the reported music of the "children of the night." Its deep woods contain skeletal-looking trees, and there are dark fens, fetid lagoons, and lakes and rivers with pitch-black water.

History[]

Early history[]

Dworgyn

At one point, Merle Ambrose traveled to Darkmoor, and came across Mortis when he was just a sapling. Ambrose took him from his home and brought him back to Wizard City, where he would become the Death Tree outside of the School of Death.[1]

Dworgyn was born in the laboratory of Dr. Finkelstein to his Lab Assistant. He was groomed to follow his father into service, assisting him as part of the family's long-running tradition of assisting scientists. However, Dworgyn would be secretly reading Jamie Skinner comic books from his complete collection. Dr. Finkelstein would eventually find out and threw the comics into the Darkmere Abyss. This wouldn't help though, as Dworgyn went on to fail his exams. Finkelstein determined his son would be a valet and sent him to Wizard City to take advantage of an open position assisting Malistaire Drake.[2]

Madame Vadima left Darkmoor and found her way on Skull Island, though what made her leave her homeland is unknown. Some say that she's hiding on Skull Island under the protection of Captain Horace Avery, but no one knows who or what she's hiding from.[3]

Malistaire the Undying[]

"Young Wizard, I did not expect you to have the courage or strength of character to come this far on your own. That will be a fitting epitaph, and serve as a warning to all whose ego is unchecked. There are always things in the dark that are bigger and scarier than we think we are. Let us see how long your light lasts."
Malistaire the Undying to the Wizard[src]

After his defeat on Xibalba, Malistaire the Undying took up Castle Darkmoor, usurping family castle owner Shane von Shane. He invoked the Law of Kan Davasi on the Wizard,[1] an ancient custom that created an impenetrable blocking anyone else from interfering.[4] Renfield FlyGob, the herald of Darkmoor, was the Wizard's guide into the impenetrable depths of the castle, but he could not accompany them. In order to get to Malistaire, they would need to enter the halls of Castle Darkmoor and find the secret of the Observatory.[5][6]

Unused rendered Carpathes Village area in Pirate101

  • Darkmoor was originally intended to be one of the Worlds visited as part of the El Dorado arc in Pirate101. There has been concept art released as well as actual images of in-game assets showing that the World was in development prior to the arc being cut short with the release of Book XV in 2016.
    • Carpathes Village, or simply Carpathes, was going to be a location visited in the game, and was the only known area modeled. Carpathes was mentioned by Tatyana, the Spirit of Darkmoor, in Wizard101.
  • The area of Dimwood Vale in Wizard101 suggests a possible cultural connection between Darkmoor and Avalon.
