- "This place is a vile Conatus - a will, a poisonous impulse to exist at the cost of all living things. Can't you feel it? The pull of the void?"
- ―String Caster Fuzhi[src]
Conatus is the central area of the world of Novus. It is one of the Shards of Novus, pieces of Dasein which splintered from him after he attempted to use the World Synthesizer to manifest into a world that would serve the needs of all the people in the Spiral. The World Powers of the Spiral would settle their individual Shards following their appearances in the skies of their respective worlds, and Marleybone, Monquista, Polaris, and Valencia set up camps within Conatus.
