Ceren Nightchant

Ceren Nightchant is a Theurgist who was a student of the Ravenwood School of Life learning under Moolinda Wu by the time of the incursion on Unicorn Way. Nightchant grew up on Unicorn Way, and as such he knew it well. When the incursion by the Undead brought darkness to his beloved street, he came to check out what was going on, and in the process met the Wizard. Together and with the power of the great Lady Oriel, it was discovered that Rattlebones was behind the incursion, and that the Underworld tyrant was holed up in the Archives, looking for a tome for his Dark Master, Malistaire. This tome was recovered when Rattlebones left it behind after being bested in battle by the Wizard, and with Nightchant's suggestion it was taken to Harold Argleston. Nightchant would later attend the Wizard's graduation in Ravenwood.

Biography[]

Supernatural incursion[]

After hearing that there was trouble on Unicorn Way, Ceren Nightchant came to check out what was happening. As soon as he saw the Skeletal Pirates, he stopped himself from going any further out of fear.

Soon after, the Wizard arrived on Unicorn Way after being sent in by Merle Ambrose to deal with the supernatural incursion taking place. They helped the Wizard City Guard by pushing back the Lost Souls, and Nightchant couldn't help but notice how they took them down, and was impressed by their spell-casting skills.[2] Following their lead, Private Connelly and the Guard began to push back the Undead on their own, but they couldn't do it for long and so they needed to know the reason why the incursion was happening. Connelly suggested that maybe Nightchant knew something useful.[3]

The Wizard approached Nightchant, and he greeted them. He told them of his reason for being there and his fear of the Skeletal Pirates. As the two talked about the skeletons, Olivia Dawnwillow interjected and asked them to talk to her first before facing them, but the two wizards did not listen to her request. Nightchant asked if the Wizard could fight a few of the Skeletal Pirates to see how tough they were.

When the Wizard got back, they informed Nightchant of the Pirates mentioning a 'rattle in the Darkness'. From this news, he made the conclusion that it was clear some kind of evil magic had emerged, and that it would take more than just the Wizard City Guard to stop it.[2] He suggested that Lady Oriel, a wise Seraph and Warden of the Fairies, might be able to help get a better understanding of the dark forces they were facing, and told the Wizard to go to her Hedge Maze at the end of Unicorn Way and speak with her.[4] The Wizard learned from Oriel that the same evil forces that had loosed the Undead on the street had also corrupted her beloved Fairies, and they dispelled the Bone Cages holding the dark magic that corrupted the Fairies and also collected dust from the corrupted Fairies,[5] which Oriel used to magically connect with the dust. She found scars of a dark magic that had been banished from Wizard City long ago, later finding out that it was none other than the Underworld tyrant, Rattlebones. She tried to use the dust to find his exact location, but her vision was obscured by the immense darkness, only seeing a tower ringed in bones. She told the Wizard to go back to Nightchant to find out what building she saw in the vision.

Ceren Nightchant welcomed the Wizard back when they showed back up, jokingly saying they were gone so long he thought they had joined a Skeletal Pirate crew, and asking what Oriel had to say. He was told that Oriel believed Rattlebones was behind the incursion of Unicorn Way, and that she saw that Rattlebones was in a tower ringed in bones. Nightchant made the connection that this tower could be the old Archives, because the Skeletal Pirates were concentrated around it. The Wizard walked in on Rattlebones and his thrall rummaging through the Archives, looking for a tome. They fought Rattlebones in the tower and bested him, but Rattlebones assured them that Malistaire's plan was already in motion. In his haste to leave, Rattlebones dropped the tome he had found for his Dark Master, and so the Wizard took it back to Ceren as it could be important.

When the Wizard came back to Nightchant, he was very excited at the defeat of Rattlebones, and pointed out the Dark Magic that was lifting from Unicorn Way. He took note of the tome that the Wizard was carrying and that it looked important, and told the Wizard to take it to Harold Argleston at the Wizard City Library in the Commons, as Argleston would know what to do with it.[6]

After hearing rumors about the corruption of the Fairies on Unicorn Way, Ceren Nightchant, a student of Ravenwood, was sent by his Professor, Moolinda Wu, to investigate the situation. Before he could get very far, the Wizard City Guard stopped him and would not allow him to go any further. Not long after, the Wizard was sent into Unicorn Way by Merle Ambrose, and Nightchant greeted them and asked if they could walk down Unicorn Way to see if they could find any Fairies. The Wizard returned, and informed Nightchant that the Fairies had been somehow corrupted and were swarming Unicorn Way, confirming his fear.[7]

Nightchant expressed that he knew something foul was afoot, and invited the Wizard to help him figure out what exactly was going on in Unicorn Way. He asked them if they knew who Lady Oriel was, before telling them to go speak with her in her Hedge Maze at the far end of the street to see if she knew what happened to the Fairies.[8] Helping Oriel by investigating the dust dropped by the Dark Fairies, she was able to conclude that the corruption was an enchantment done by something Undead,[9] and told the Wizard to free her Fairies from the Bone Cages that had been hung along the street, which Oriel believed were being used to trap and then enchant her Fairies to corrupt them.[10] Once this was done, the only thing left to do was find out who was behind the corruption, and Oriel heard from her Fairies of monster whose bones made a "clacking sound" as it came for them. Oriel did not know who this could be, so she sent the Wizard back to Ceren Nightchant to find out if he knew who it was.

Meeting back up with the Wizard, Nightchant said that he had suspected Lady Blackhope was behind the Dark Fairies when they first started to show up, but that he didn't believe it was her. After the Wizard told Nightchant of the report from the Fairies of a skeleton, it all clicked in Nightchant's mind, it had to be Rattlebones.[11] He told the Wizard that Rattlebones had taken over his old friend Delia's tower, and told them to find Rattlebones in the tower and stop him before he could corrupt any more Fairies.[1] The Wizard fought and defeated Rattlebones in a duel, and the skeleton revealed that the corruption of the Fairies was just the beginning of his master Malistaire's plans for Wizard City. Upon the Wizard coming back to him and telling him the news, Nightchant congratulated them on saving the Fairies and besting Rattlebones, but Wizard City wasn't out of the woods yet. He told them to report their progress to Headmaster Ambrose, which he believed would possibly determine what doom had come to Wizard City.[12]

  • Ceren Nightchant is the deuteragonist in the questline of Unicorn Way, the first "street" in Wizard City, the debut world of Arc 1. He helps the player to uncover what's happening in Unicorn Way, serving as their partner through the end of the street's story.
  • With the FTUE (First Time User Experience) updates to Wizard101 in the Summer 2020 Update, the Unicorn Way questline was remade entirely. Ceren Nightchant was changed from the previous characterization of a wiser and braver student sent by Moolinda Wu to investigate the situation going on in Unicorn Way, to a fear-stricken, but still clever peer to the player who came to Unicorn Way on his own accord when things went down.
  • The FTUE incarnation of Ceren Nightchant is voiced by Brad Rothwell.[14]
